This 5km climb up a heavily wooded stream gorge starts abruptly from the bridge (633m spot-height), passing the Carsartelli Monument very early on with sections between 9.3-14.2%. This really is the steepest climb of the Raid, with speed at 4mph or less.

9.7(15.5)

1 hr 14 mins

Ax is a rather strange thermal spa town with no shortage of hotels but a disappointing shortage of life. Stayed at the good value Hotel de France 2* (00 33 5 61 64 60 97) on the main road but had a quiet room in the extension out the back. Ate pizza across in the square – outdoor table (even at 700m). Good (chilled) red wine, bad crème brulée! Buffet breakfast. (NB. This hotel was alone in insisting on taking a passport).
